Services

Services

At the heart of the Liberal Jewish Community (LJG) Amsterdam are the services and religious activities that are a core function of all synagogues. At the LJG Amsterdam there are weekly Shabbat services and services for all the Jewish holidays:

Erev Shabbat/holiday: 20:00

Shabbat/holiday morning: 10:00

Services are usually led by one of our rabbis and our chazzan. The rabbi delivers a sermon on Friday night and a shorter explanation of the week’s torah reading and/or haftorah on Saturday morning.

The community is also proud of its members who regularly layn, read the torah and haftorah, and can also lead or sing the services and or give a drasha, a sermon. If you are interested in being an active participant in the Shabbat or holiday services, please contact the Office of the Rabbis.

Those present at the service may be honoured with a mitzvah, the opportunity to take an active role, particularly during the Torah service. Our Shamash, Etienne Denneboom assigns honours at the beginning of the service. He explains and supports people in what they do. No prior knowledge is necessary.

If interested in attending a service we kindly request you to contact the secretary, at least one week before. The request has to be accompanied by a copy of a valid ID of all visitors.
